I have written several blog posts regarding the Swedish National Pharmaceutical Strategy (NPS) since it was published back in August 2011. Focus has been on action area number 7, ”Decrease the environmental impact from pharmaceuticals”. And as you know, I am acting on behalf of LIF (the Research Based Pharmaceutical Industry in Sweden), as project manager for NPS, task 7.2. The most important deliverable from NPS 7.2 is an environmental assessment model for pharmaceutical products. The model should be designed to enable green economic incentives within the generic substitution system in Sweden (see also NPS 7.1).
Next week, LIF will deliver the model proposal to the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs. It has been a very interesting and fun process to develop the model proposal. We have worked closely with both Swedish stakeholders such as agencies (MPA and TLV), County Councils and SKL, academia, SEMCo, and FGL (the generics manufacturers’ association) as well as with environmental experts from the global pharmaceutical industry. The discussions started already back in 2011 in a series of round-table discussions (see e.g. blog posts from March 28 2011, May 11 2011, May 17 2011, Sept 1 2011, and Oct 3 2011). And the discussions have continued during 2012 (e.g. Nov 22 2012) and 2013 (e.g. Jan 29 2013). We now have a draft in a late, close to final, version. Important environmental aspects of the model are as expected API releases from manufacturing operations, but also resource efficiency with special focus on carbon footprinting. I will come back with more details in the end of next week when the proposal is submitted.
