Sustainability May in Uppsala – regarding pharmaceuticals

Water Conference in Uppsala

Water Conference in Uppsala

May 11, i.e. yesterday, a seminar on Pharmaceuticals in Drinking Water was arranged at Uppsala University. The seminar was presented in the following way:

”How clean is your drinking water? Find out how pharmaceuticals used for treating diseases are finding their way into your drinking water. Come and participate in a three-part conference looking at what are the risks and exploring what we can do about them”

The parties in the three-part conference was in addition to myself, also Åke Wennmalm, previously the Environmental Director at SLL (Stockholm County Council), today running SustainPharma, and Justin Makii, from CEMUS ROOTS. Justin had put the seminar together and he opened up the discussion by giving a very good and thorough review of the pharmaceuticals in the environment topic, focused of course on waste water and drinking water issues.

Åke Wennmalm then gave a presentation where he used both his knowledge and long experience as a physician, but also his experience from working with environmental issues within Swedish health care sector. A good mixture of educational content and data from studies conducted by SLL.

After lunch I gave my presentation on the industry’s perspective on the topic. I started my discussions from a holistic perspective on sustainability strategies. One of my first slides was, not surprisingly if you have read my blog or seen any of my recent presentations, the Sustainable Quadrant:

I also used the so called Walderik-Mattson pyramid in order to visualize the different strategies on sustainability applied in different regions around the globe:

I came in on more details on environmental sustainability when I described and discussed the sustainability initiatives on markets in ”the top of the pyramid”. I spent considerable time on green pharmaceuticals, i.e. topics such as green chemistry, third party manufacturing, sustainable water policies, and of course also my favourite topic for the time being – green economic incentives. To read more on the latter topic see my blog posts from e.g. May 11, 2011, May 3, 2011, April 20, 2011, and March 28, 2011.

The seminar ended with a panel discussion where I, Åke and Justin answered questions from the audiance. During the discussions we touched upon the MistraPharma-project several times, and the valuable information and answers coming out from that project.

Good and interesting discussions! I really like to thanks Justin and Cemus Roots for arranging the seminar, these kind of meetings are very valuable for all of us!

Thanks!

Interesting – but what year was this published? What year was the seminar? There are so many seminars going on all the time – I am happy, because I was one of us who raised the question in our report ”Pharmaceuticals and environment – what do we know today?” in 1997.

The conference was held May this year (2011) in Uppsala.
