Dizza Tobak - time to vote on your favourites

Kategorier:

Dizza Tobak is a tobacco prevention project, run by SAMBA in collaboration with A Non Smoking Generation, with support from Pfizer AB and Pfizer Foundation. The idea with the project is that the kids themselves shall develop the best “anti tobacco campaign ever”. They have been asked to up-load their contributions on dizzatobak.se by end of March. And we are there now - hence, the voting begins!

See all brilliant up-loaded contributions on the web page and give votes to your favourites. The winning school class receives 25 000 SEK! Not bad! To see one of my own favourites - follow this link and view a cool cover on Rihanna’s and Eminem’s mega hit.

May the best class win!

Årets Kvinnohjärta (”Woman’s Hearth of the Year”) 2011

Kategorier:

I am so proud! Yesterday I was honored the award “Årets Kvinnohjärta 2011″ (roghly translated to Woman’s Hearth of the Year 2011) by Sollentuna Kvinnojour (”the Women’s Shelter in Sollentuna Municipality”) from the hands of their chairperson Maria Nettersand.

Pfizer has collaborated with the Sollentuna Kvinnojour for two years now. The ultimate vision for the collaborative work is to find a 100% completely secure process, with guaranteed confidentiality, for mistreated and battered women to find adequate treatment within Swedish health care. Their identities or where they are being treated must not ever be revealed to anyone. If that happens, and yes it has happened, these women and their children could often be brought back to the hell they managed to escape from…

I am so honored to have received the award “Årets Kvinnohjärta 2011″ and very touched and almost embarrassed over the way the nomination was worded:

Sollentuna Kvinnojour tilldelar

Bengt Mattson

I wish to once again express my deepest gratitude to Sollentuna Kvinnojour for the award. I am very proud and honored! And thanks to Anki Elken for taking the picture above. A valuable memory!

A Green Pricing and Reimbursement System

Kategorier:

I have discussed green incentives and green criteria for pharmaceuticals several times before. See for instance these blog posts from 2011 Feb 23, Feb 8, Jan 18, and from 2010 Nov 12.

Going green...

Going green...

Today we took an important step in the process of “greening the systems” for pharmaceuticals. LIF, the research based pharmaceutical industry in Sweden, had invited several stakeholders to a meeting called “Miljöanpassade läkemedel - vad är det och hur når vi dit?” (rough translation would be: Green pharmaceuticals - what is it and how to get there?). Stakeholders represented in addition to LIF-colleagues today were Charlotte Unger from the Swedish MPA (Läkemedelsverket), Leif Lundquist and Niklas Hedberg from the Swedish Dental and Pharmaceuticals Benefits Agency (TLV), Cecilia Marlow from Swedish Pharmacy Association, Kenneth Nyblom from the Association for Generic Pharmaceuticals (FGL), Maria Azzopardi from the Swedish Environmental Management Council (Miljöstyrningsrådet), Siw Martini and Åke Wennmalm from Stockholm County Council (SLL), Karl Lilja from IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute (IVL), and Joakim Larsson from Sahlgrenska Akademin.

Joakim L gave us first, as a background to today’s discussions and to create a “sense of urgency”, a summary of the research he and coworkers have performed over the years in India, looking into the issue of releases from pharmaceutical manufacturing. Read for instance my blog post from Aug 16, 2010, to get a summary of the issue.

After that, Maria A presented the guiding document on environmental and CSR-criteria for public procurement of pharmaceuticals, developed by Miljöstyrningsrådet in collaboration with stakeholders. One comment given after the presentation was that the criteria presented in the guide might be suitable for publicly procured pharmaceuticals in the tender business, with all the different aspects that need to be taken into account based upon the EU directive on Public Procurement and the related Swedish regulation ”Lagen om Offentlig Upphandling”, but perhaps not for the rest of the pharmaceutical market. The guide is pretty much seen as an attempt to generate a “fairly low bar” that most pharameceutical companies and products should be able to pass, in order to secure as many as possible tenders to be received by the procurement organisations. For the rest of the pharma market, i.e. products that are not part of the tender business, there should be a possibility to have higher ambitions and criteria that only some companies and products meet. Those companies and products would hence drive a continuous improvment over time in order to remain with their competetive edge and be granted the green incentives.

We had long and good discussions and making a long story short, and not going into any details on the different ideas around the incentives or the criteria, we agreed to the following:

- A new meeting to be held in end of September

- At that meeting working groups initiated today will present their ideas regarding

– criteria to be fulfilled in order to declare a company/product “green”

– costs to be managed within the pricing and reimbursement system, or elsewhere, associated with different “green incentives”

And already before that, Swedish MPA will have presented a report on their governmental commission regarding potential incorporation of environmental requirements into GMP. The report is due end of June. This will of course also be integrated into the discussions prior to our next meeting in September and during that meeting. Another important piece to be integrated into these discussions is of course the National Pharmaceutical Strategy, which will be presented in June as well. Read more about the strategy here on my blog (e.g. Dec 12, 2010) or via this link.

I am already looking forward to the next meeting with the group of stakeholders but also of course to the work process we have in front of us. It will be very interesting to see if we manage to find relevant and reasonable criteria to establish a common understanding for “what is a green pharmaceutical”, and to find incentives interesting enough for industry and within a reasonable cost frame that is acceptable to a payer. And also to find the solution to the obvious question: Who is that payer? Additionally I really hope that we manage to describe the roles and responsibilities of all the different actors on this new green pharmaceutical market, i.e. the manufacturer, the pharmacies, the patients and customers, the payers and the agencies.

We have embarked on a Green Journey - that’s for sure!

Earth Hour 2011

Kategorier:

So, yesterday we all experienced Earth Hour 2011.

As you know by now (see my previous blog posts from Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday) I am a big fan of WWF’s manifestation and support for the fight against climate change. I recommend you to see all nice pictures on WWF’s webpage documenting how people all around the world participated.

I was first outside our office in Silverdal in Sollentuna watching the lights go off.

Our office with lights on...

To be honest I am always somewhat disappointed - it does not get as dark as I would like to see it. For good reasons though, there are a lot of emergency and security lights that remain switched on.

Lights switched off...

In a close up it is even more obvious that there are quite a few security/emergency lights in an office of this kind.

As you see, several lights remain switched on, but nevertheless - the message is clear: We support the manifestation!

I then went home to enjoy some cosy Earth Hour experiences with candels, some wine and my violin.

It was just so nice. I should arrange my own little Earth Hour more often! It was a cosy feeling sitting there playing my violin in the light from candels, sipping on ecological red wine. And the discussions regarding global warming I had earlier on during the day with my son filled me with great hope. He and his friend celebrated Earth Hour together with discussions in the light of candels. There is hope for change!

Candels give that cosy feeling

Earth Hour - a great opportunity for awareness building

Kategorier:

I have to admit that I remain surprised…

On March 23, I made a comment here on the blog about the fact that csr-i-praktiken.se published a fairly critical article about Earth Hour, presenting their opinion that the manifestation tricks and fools citizens. I am happy to see that WWF has responded today, but surprised to see that also other media, for instance Expressen today, have picked up the critical view of the manifestation.

The reason for suprise is that I cannot really understand that certain opinion leaders, politicians and others seem to believe that WWF and millions of Earth Hour participants around the globe would actually think that switching off the lights for one hour “is the real thing”. To me, and to most participants I believe, this is about communication, being part of something bigger than yourself and sending signals to decision makers.

And last but definitely not least - Earth Hour is a great opportunity for awareness building. For us as a company it provides a framework for a week long awareness campaign specifically on our climate change initiatives, but also reflecting on other sustainability perspectives. For me as a parent - it provides a brilliant opportunity to discuss environmental matters with my son. It also provides an opportunity to discuss green issues with friends and neighbors. What in the world could be wrong with that? All these discussions and sharing of experiences will of course result in environmental actions throughout the year.

Earth Hour is not a scape goat from doing real activities - it is a good starting point for change!
